BETH COX

CREATIVE EDITOR & INCLUSION SPECIALIST

The best books come from seeing what others don't.

WHY CURIOSITY STUDIO? WHY ME?

Curiosity Studio's nimble approach to publishing results in books that are visually distinctive and editorially ambitious. This kind of approach to creating books that spark curiosity and reach readers across the world feels like a natural fit for me. I'm an experienced editor and creative inclusion expert, with over 20 years in children's publishing across picture books, illustrated non-fiction, novelty formats, games and educational programmes. After more than a decade of self-employment, I'm ready to bring that experience in-house, working collaboratively with a team.

I have a huge passion for high-quality non-fiction. Beautifully designed and thought-out information books widen understanding and appreciation of the world and attract even reluctant readers. With non-fiction projects I particularly enjoy identifying how best to organise and present complex information so that it's logical and engaging for the reader. A neurodivergent way of seeing things means I notice what others overlook and ask the questions that don't always get asked early enough in the process.

Commissioning experience interwoven with practical inclusion expertise, built over 20 years and applied to illustrated non-fiction across formats and age ranges, is a combination that feels like a genuinely distinctive fit for Curiosity Studio.

WHAT I BRING

STRATEGIC COMMISSIONING OPPORTUNITIES

ILLUMINATING THE UNSEEN

Developing titles that explore and bring to life the things that most people never think to look for.

The Street Beneath My Feet is successful because it taps perfectly into children's natural curiosity about how the world actually works.

  • What can't we see?

  • What's going on beneath the surface, literally and figuratively?

  • How does the world really work?

When so much information is available at the touch of a button, books that make the invisible visible do something screens can't. They turn children into astute, critical thinkers who know how to look deeper. Building on what Curiosity Studio has already established in this space, I see real potential to develop the territory further and reach new age ranges.

EVERYDAY ADVOCACY THAT WORKS FOR EVERY CHILD

There's real power in supporting children to advocate for themselves. So many young people can spot what's unfair and what doesn't work a mile off, but think there's not much they can do about it.

There are plenty of books about inspirational people who have done world-changing things, but what about the everyday?

  • The bins blown over in the wind spreading litter across the street?

  • A change at school that means less choice?

  • The sign that presumes your family looks like everyone else's?

Books that explore and demonstrate everyday advocacy can give children real tools for navigating the world and support their mental health along the way.

Many books around emotional literacy and empowerment have an unrealistic positivity that can feel alienating to children who are really struggling, and most assume skills that aren't equally accessible to all. I consistently come back to the need for books that build confidence, self-advocacy and emotional regulation in ways that genuinely work for all children, regardless of how their brains are wired or what they are navigating.

BUILDING ON THE BACKLIST

There's real value in a backlist, and it can offer some of the most exciting commissioning opportunities through reimagining and reworking what already exists. As well as non-fiction experience, I have a solid grounding in creating books for younger readers. Curiosity Studio has already built on proven concepts to reach different age groups. I'd love to take that further.

  • What angle would work for a different audience?

  • Could an interactive element support a younger reader?

  • What should stay and what should go?

The Quarto list holds a wealth of opportunity for re-versioning and updating for new audiences. Understanding what a different reader needs at a different stage, rather than just simplifying, extends the life of a title, opens up a whole new market, and presents a compelling commercial opportunity.

PUBLISHING HIGHLIGHTS

ALL BODIES ARE WONDERFUL

b small.png

Devised a science-first approach for a book celebrating bodies, proposing that understanding why we are all different is more powerful than simply being told we are. Starting with cells, genes and the biology of human variation before looking at society and discrimination gave children real knowledge rather than reassurance, and produced something genuinely distinctive in a crowded market. The publisher has since replicated the structure to grow a series.

TRAVELLER TALES

Child_s_Play_Logo_RGB_120x@2x copy.jpg

Conceived the series after noticing that Romani communities were entirely absent from children's picture books. Identified Richard O'Neill as the right author and developed a close editorial partnership to translate his oral stories into picture book form, shaping text, commissioning illustrators and developing each title from concept to print. The series now spans six books.

RICHARD O'NEILL:

LEVEL HEADERS

b small.png

Scoped out and wrote the activity book series. I worked with a specialist on key themes and concepts grounded in building self-esteem and confidence in 8–10-year-olds, and translated her approaches into activities that would work on the page. The success of the first two titles led to two further commissions.

LOOK TOUCH LEARN

Developed the concept in response to a brief to create a new concept for the concertina book format. Explored the research focus of various baby labs and studies into patterns in nature before proposing interactive board books grounded in the science of infant vision development. Worked with Sussex Baby Lab to develop the concept further, ensuring every tactile and interactive element earned its place.

OFF TO THE PARK!

Child_s_Play_Logo_RGB_120x@2x copy.jpg

Collaborated with Child’s Play and BookTrust to develop this title for inclusion in the BookTouch pack. Conducted in-depth research to ensure the tactile elements were meaningful for blind and visually impaired people, while keeping budget in mind. It was subsequently selected for inclusion in the Bookstart Star pack for children who have delayed development of fine motor skills.

GAMES

Worked with Sarah Batten on developing
inclusive versions of popular games.

For We Are Family I fleshed out the family concepts, created backstories, and briefed the illustrator to ensure inclusion and authentic depiction of a wide range of family setups with true intersectionality.

For Who Am I, I consulted on character selection to ensure authentic and representative balance across gender, ethnicity and achievement, and developed questions that worked across the full range of characters selected.

RICHARD O'NEILL, STORYTELLER/AUTHOR

A true professional with an amazing eye for detail. Her enthusiasm for the project from the beginning was a vital component to the books getting commissioned in the first place.

Beth will come up with ideas and approaches you never even thought of and she'll make sure your work as inclusive as it can be, which is not only the right thing to do but will also give you the biggest global audience.

CHRISTOFERE FILA, LANTANA

In just 30 minutes, she offered so many thoughtful suggestions, far more than I had hoped for ... deep knowledge, practical expertise, and a warm, thoughtful approach that made the experience feel both constructive and encouraging...

... she has a real talent for identifying meaningful improvements while keeping the heart of the work intact.

KATE DE VILLIERS, LITTLE GREY CELLS

She can see a project from many perspectives, which ensures she is thorough, thoughtful and dynamic; she is not afraid to make decisions for the benefit of the product and its audience.

Beth will get involved in every aspect of a project in order to ensure its successful delivery, and I would not hesitate to recommend her.
